Chumphon Pinnacle

Chumphon Pinnacle is the most famous dive site in and around Koh Tao and second only to Sail Rock as the best site in the Gulf of Thailand. Due to its proximity to the island – 12 km away which is around a 40 minutes boat ride – Chumphon is certainly the most popular.

The site boasts great visibility most of the year, with either a deep thermocline around 25 metres, or more often than not, crystal clear all the way to the bottom.

The dive site comprises of one huge granite pinnacle and a series of smaller pinnacles rising from the bottom at 36 metres to within 14 metres of the surface, and running just off a north south axis. The top of the pinnacle is literally covered in beautiful pink anemones where Pink Anemone fish, crabs, shrimps and Scorpion fish can be seen. There is a school of inquisitive Bat Fish around the bottom of the descent line.

Head North West, passing between two smaller pinnacles and you will see a large overhang, on the far side of the bigger rock at around 22 metres. Here you will see several huge Giant Grouper, the largest of which must be almost 2 metres in length.

Just south is a smaller pinnacle known as Barracuda rock which is well worth a visit as it a resting place for Giant Groupers and quite often huge schools of barracuda can be seen while navigating around the rock.

Chumphon Pinnacle is abundant in marine life with huge schools of Big Eyed Jacks, Trevelly, Chevron Barracuda frequently seen along with King Mackerels and Giant Barracuda. During the months of March - May and August - October our biggest visitors, Whalesharks accompanied by Cobia and Remora’s are often sighted here.

Popular with experienced divers Chumphon Pinnacle is very much an Advanced site although it is popular for PADI Deep Adventure dive and PADI Deep Diver Specialty training dives too.
