Green Rock is one of Koh Tao’s top dive sites and a popular choice for fun divers due to the variety the site offers.

Diving Koh Tao - Chumphon Pinnacle

Located off the North West coastline of Koh Nang Yuan, Green Rock is made up of large rock formations and boulders which have created a series of swim throughs and small caves offering divers an exciting experience.

At certain times there are strong currents present making Green Rock one of Koh Tao’s more challenging dive sites. Visibility is dependent on the season but generally ranges between 10m-20m. Depth ranges from 28m on the sandy bottom up to 3m at the top of the rock formation making this an ideal site for Advanced Open water divers or more qualified.

Hawksbill and Green turtles are regular visitors and the occasional banded sea snake can be seen just off the main formation. Big Jenkins whiprays and chevron barracuda hang around at the deeper depths. Tube Anemones can also be seen here out in the sand.

Yellowtail Barracuda school in huge numbers, the sun light shimmering off their bodies as they surround the top of green rock. Harlequin sweetlips and blue ringed anglefish are prominent swimming around the cracks and crevices as well as gawping white eyed moray eels.

On the inside of the caves dancing Durban shrimp can be seen scurrying around and if using a torch you will be able to spot cleaner shrimp hiding here as well. Some lovely nudibranches can be spotted crawling around the rocks for the more macro minded diver.

One of the most memorable parts of this dive site is the “trigger pits”. Located just to the North of the main site Titan and Yellow margin triggerfish have created a moon like landscape in the middle of a large sandy area which is home to nesting female triggerfish during the reproductive season. This can make for a very exciting beginning to a dive if you choose to navigate through towards the rocks so our advice during this time of year - stay clear!
