Shark Island

Diving Koh Tao - Shark Island

Named for its likeness to a shark's dorsal fin, Shark Island is a small uninhabited island situated around 300m off Koh Tao’s South coast.

Due to its position currents can be strong here but due to it being a small island you can easily avoid them and have a great dive. Shark Island is probably Koh Tao’s most varied dive site, with many beautiful corals and a diverse array of marine life inhabiting the site. And a few sharks if you are lucky.

Depth here ranges from 25m when at the sandy bottom up to 5m when moving closer to the shallows of the island. Up to towards the shallower depths the large boulders have created little safe havens for the fish and provide exciting areas to explore.

The site plays host to some of the most stunning soft and hard corals in the Gulf of Thailand. The soft tree corals shine in brilliant purple while big gorgonian fan and whip corals hang out from the sloping reef. Brain corals, large barrel sponges and magnificent anemones add to the reefs diversity and beauty.

Blue spotted ribbontail rays are commonly sighted here hiding underneath outcroppings, while schools of Weibels Butterflyfish shine and shimmer in the sunlight. Scribble filefish add to the masses of reef fish making Shark Island their home. Turtles are regular visitors sometimes using the currents to zoom around.

Black tip reef sharks can be seen swimming around the deeper side and if you are lucky the illusive leopard shark can be sighted out in the sand while Whale Sharks occasionally cruise on by. Making this a dive site which combines brilliant corals, plenty of reef fish and also the chance to catch a sight of the big pelagics.
