Internship: PADI Divemaster

What 'Diving Lifestyle' Internship program did you complete?

I have been diving with Crystal Dive Resort since July 2015. I have done my open water, advanced, EFR, rescue course and now I have just completed my Divemaster program.

PADI Divemaster Internship - Koh Tao, Thailand

What where you doing before you joined Crystal Dive's team to complete your scuba diving internship (Diving Lifestyle Program) on Koh Tao?

I am a Speech-language therapist and Audiologist. I have been working for the Department of Health in South Africa for the past 5 years in clinics and hospitals around Johannesburg.

How long have you spent completing your scuba diving internship?

I spent 7 weeks completing my divemaster program as I wanted to take my time and enjoy life on this island. I took a few days off to go to Laos to extend my visa. It was a very long journey but I believe life is what you make of it, and at least I got to see a bit of Laos which was a good experience.

It made me miss Koh Tao, which tells me I am where I need to be.

I also took up some part time working teaching extra English lessons to a few Thai children, so it became a bit of a juggling act to get finished with the program in time for my snorkel test.

What was your favourite part of the scuba dive master program and why?

PADI Divemaster Internship - Koh Tao, ThailandThe best part, hands down, was meeting so many incredible people from all over the world. We have formed a family at Crystal that keeps growing and will continue to grow. I have been able to dive and experience the beauty of the underwater world with so many of my friends.

I also enjoyed assisting on the courses as it gave me experience with customer service in the diving industry and problem solving under water. It showed me how each course and each group of students are so unique and how dynamic the crystal staff are.

What was your least favourite part and why?

The program was quite intense, but I don't think that that is a bad thing. I really enjoyed the training. I would have to say my least favourite part was the knowledge reviews because I found it difficult to get time to sit down and get it done.

I would much rather be diving than with my head in the books but it is a necessary part of the program.

Who was your favourite Instructor and why?

The Crystal team is amazing. I was blessed to be able to learn from many instructors throughout my journey. I would say I learned the most from Tina. She conducted my skill circuits and workshops, and I assisted her on an open water and rescue course. Tina manages to turn every situation into fun, so needless to say we spent a large part of the DMT program in fits of laughter. I felt my confidence grow so much while working with her.

As a qualified PADI Dive master (or Instructor) what are you future plans with regards to scuba?

With any luck, I will stay on Koh Tao for as long as possible. I plan to complete my internship and start freelancing to gain experience as a dive master on the island. I would also like to do my IDC and MSDT at some stage.

And what about Koh Tao?

Koh Tao is magic! I have fallen in love with this island. It has everything you need. Amazing diving, great food, fantastic people from everywhere in the world, an awesome night life and beautiful beaches.

What more could you ask for in paradise?

And your favourite restaurant on Koh Tao?

For Thai food, I love Nana's Thai Food. The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming. The food never takes long and is always divine. Some of the street venders are excellent and very reasonably priced. For Western food, I would have to say Zest. They do an amazing breakfast and delicious fresh salads.

How did you spend your non diving days on Koh Tao?

FUN DIVING! And when I'm not diving I like to read on the beach, go to view points around the island and of course a little bit of day drinking never hurts… There is nothing better than appreciating the beauty that is Koh Tao with an ice cold Leo in your hand and your best friends surrounding you.

Where are you heading next?

What do you mean where to next? Koh Tao has become my home and diving has become my passion so why leave a place you love?
