PADI Divemaster Internship, ThailandKevin Boudier - Divemaster Internship

Name: Kevin Boudier

Hometown: Paris, France

Age: 30

Internship: PADI Divemaster

What PADI scuba diving Internship program did you complete?

I just finished the PADI Divemaster Program at Crystal, and I just started to do my internship in this dive center.

What were you doing before you joined Crystal Dive?

I was an IT consultant, working on implementation projects as PMO or Business Analyst.

How long have you spent completing your scuba diving internship?

I needed 6 weeks to finish the divemaster, including the 40 dives required to start the program.

What was your favourite part of your scuba diving internship and why?

If I had to choose one part in particular, I would say to assist the rescue course with Marie K as instructor, because it was very funny to play a panicked diver.

What was your least favourite and why?

I do not have a least favourite moment, everything was great, and that includes all the assists on Open Water, Advanced Open Water and Rescue Diver courses.

Who was your favourite instructor and why?

All the instructor that I assisted are very good: Torben, Stephanie, Tiago, Marie K, Carsten... If I really had to choose one I would say Stephanie Tuma. She is my mentor. I really liked her German efficiency and rigor while she teaches. And it is also compatible with a lot of fun and entertainment for the students as she could demonstrate during her courses.

During your scuba diving internship which of the additional Marine Conservation 'ECO' program activities did you take part in and which did you enjoy the most?

I participated to various sessions, including some reef cleaning (we remove the plastic trash brought by the currents), coral watch (we observe the coral colours and record data to have indicators about the coral wealth on the dive sites), coral reef observation (we inventory species and measure the underwater-life density on a specific dive site), and coral reef preservation (we remove invasive species threatening the coral, like Crowns of Thorns).

Do you think our additional Marine Conservation 'ECO' program was beneficial to your Professional level scuba diving training and if so why?

Absolutely. First, this program enabled me to learn a lot about Coral and the underwater wildlife interactions. Second, it made me aware of the human activity impacts on the underwater world. Third, it has really motivated me to try to sensitize people about these topics.

The more people is alerted on these environmental topics, the more likely we are to make some progresses on bigger topics like coral preservation, overfishing, plastic consumption reduction, and the ecology in general.

Professionally speaking, I would say that every knowledge about marine life, reefs and corals are useful to become a better diver and a better example for students.

As a qualified PADI Divemaster what are your future plans with regards to scuba?

I would like to pass my instructorship in the coming months, and to work in the diving industry for the next years.

And what about Koh Tao....

This island is really nice if you want to discover scuba-diving. There are dive sites adapted to every level from beginners (like Japanese Garden or Mango Bay) to confirmed divers (like Chumpon Pinnacle or South-West). It really looks like the full island is living for diving!

Favourite Restaurant?

I am an unconditional of Yangs, especially of their Chicken Cordon Bleu.

How did you spend your non-diving days?

When I was not diving, I was reading books and watching documentaries about underwater wildlife, and I also went to make snorkel on some nice bays all around the island.

Where are you heading to next?

I plan to go in New Zealand for one year, with a working holiday visa. It is colder, but there are also interesting dives to perform over there.
