Advanced Open Water - Divemaster

What were you doing before you joined Crystal Dive's team to complete your scuba diving internship (Diving Lifestyle Program) on Koh Tao?

Before I came to Thailand, I had finished university in 2011 & then I worked in retail and in a bar for a year to save money. As my plan was to come out to Thailand to try & become a DM.

How long have you spent completing your scuba diving internship?

It had taken me around 3 months to go from AOW-DM, it took me longer than most because I left the country a few times. As I had to go on a visa run anyway I decided to take a holiday from my holiday, I went to Malaysia, Bali & Vietnam.

Seeing as it is fairly cheap to travel throughout Asia once you are here, I still wanted to explore.

What was your favourite part of the scuba diving Internship and why?

I really loved being in the water every day & taking steps towards becoming a better diver. I also loved assisting on courses as they were a lot of fun, as it's really rewarding helping student divers overcome issues they may have.

Of course my favourite part is taking customers out myself and leading dives, I love seeing them getting excited about diving and having fun.

What was your least favourite part and why?

When I came to Koh Tao it was high season and there were lots of people around. A lot of them already knew each other so for me it took a little while to settle in and meet everyone. It was a little daunting at first as I was travelling alone.

Who was your favourite Instructor and why?

My mentor Manu, I only ever did my EFR course with him before I chose him as my mentor but I instantly liked him. I think he's an amazing instructor, as well as being easy to talk too and just downright hilarious. I think him & Tina do a great job of running the DM programme.

As a qualified PADI Divemaster (or Instructor) what are you future plans with regards to scuba?

I now plan on finding work as a Divemaster, as I would like to gain experience before doing my IDC in a few months time.

And what about Koh Tao?

I really love Koh Tao, there's quite a community here. It’s really relaxed in the day & at night there's a good party scene. I also managed to find bar work in high season, which I didn't think would be possible as I don't speak Thai, but there are people from so many different countries here.

And your favourite restaurant on Koh Tao?

It's probably actually a stall that sells street food on the top of the up-road, called Sawat-dee. It's really cheap and always really tasty.

How did you spend your non diving days on Koh Tao?

To be honest everyone spends most days here diving, even when I wasn't diving for Divemaster requirements I would go fun diving with friends. The only times I took days off would probably because I anticipated a hangover day, so I would usually watch movies or go swimming.

Where are you heading next?

I would like to stay in Koh Tao & work, otherwise I would like to visit other countries that are renowned for diving, so maybe Mexico, Fiji or Egypt.
