PADI Divemaster Internship, ThailandMelanie - Divemaster Internship

Name: Melanie Schneider

Hometown: Uzwil, Switzerland

Internship: PADI Divemaster

What 'Lifestyle' Diving Internship program did you complete?

Open Water to Rescue Diver last September and then I started my Divemaster internship beginning of October. Came back in January and finished it.

What where you doing before you joined Crystal Dive's team to complete your scuba diving internship (Diving Lifestyle Program) on Koh Tao?

About eight months ago I left my 7-5 office job in Switzerland for the chance to see more beautiful places everywhere in the world. My first stop was Thailand and Koh Tao and it could not have been a better start. I stayed longer than I planned and had the pleasure to go on more visa runs than I planned on.

PADI Divemaster Internship, ThailandHow long have you spent completing your scuba diving internship?

I think all in all it took me about 8 weeks. I left quickly after I started in October for my Nepal adventure and then to explore Middle Earth in NZ but in January I came back and what a great decision that was.

I call myself lucky to have met so many great fellow DMTs who did their internship alongside with me.

What was your favourite part of the scuba diving Internship and why?

I would say all the days that I just grabbed my gear and went fun diving with my friends. Exploring Koh Tao's dive sites and getting better and better at navigating the way back to the boat and occasionally getting lost when spotting a turtle. Then after a day out diving relaxing at the Crystal bar enjoying a beautiful sunset.

Oh, and the times we went out with Jenny or Nathan for some Eco Dives.

What was your least favourite part and why?

All the goodbyes to friends that are already moving on.

Who was your favourite Instructor and why?

That's a hard one. I cannot really just pick one over all the others because all the instructors that I've worked with left an impression with me. With Tina I enjoyed the skills and when I did my Underwater Naturalist speciality with her which just made me fall in love with the dive sites a little bit more. Then of course whenever I needed help everyone was up for giving me advice.

An extra shout out to my mentor Peloto who was my instructor last September for my OW & AOW and who agreed to be my mentor. I particularly liked the two times I was able to do my practical assessment (OW/AOW) him and seeing how far I got within a few months.

As a qualified PADI Divemaster (or Instructor) what are you future plans with regards to scuba?

I finished my Divemaster training mid February and quickly jumped on the IDC course beginning of March as I definitely plan on work in this industry. It changed my life since I started travelling in August and is a path I want to pursue.

And what about Koh Tao?

I went to some of the islands in Thailand and only Koh Tao has managed to cast such a spell on me. It might be just the diving, who knows. But every time I have to leave and stand on Lomprayah seeing this gem of an island getting smaller and smaller at the horizon I want to jump into the sea and swim back. When I'm talking to my family they question whether I'm ever going to move on or come back home.

This island is great for diving, relaxing at the beach and enjoying a little bit of party. I totally recommend people coming here and get some diving done.

And your favourite restaurant on Koh Tao?

Another hard question. I'm big on breakfasts so every morning I'm usually found at Zest getting something for take away unless I enjoy a day off then I'm at Coconut Monkey which serves even better coffee than Zest and has a more relaxed vibe since it's right at the beach.

In Mae Haad I like Sawas Dee and of course Yangs good food for good value. Neptune's with their all you can eat Sunday special. And on Wednesdays I enjoy being at the Hacienda enjoying their BBQ with a few nice Gin Tonics.

If you like to go the extra mile to Sairee then I can recommend Sue Chili's or Duck 995. Delicious and affordable food is easy to be found.

How did you spend your non diving days on Koh Tao?

There weren't many thankfully. But when I didn't dive then I love to enjoy the day in Chalok in a hammock or practicing yoga at Oceansound in Chalok. Or going to Sairee Beach and trying to get rid of my wet suit tan.

Where are you heading next?

The last couple of days I've been waiting for my teaching status and as soon as I get the mail from PADI I will start with team teaching at Crystal.

Then mid April I will have to leave the island to catch my flight on the 25th from Bangkok. I already fear the journey as I know that I will not be back for a couple of months. But this whole travel thing is about pushing myself and for my next 'project' I plan to improve my French & Spanish and hope to work as a PADI Instructor for a bit earning some more experience.
