Internship: PADI Divemaster

Instructor Internship, ThailandWhat 'Diving Lifestyle' Internship program did you complete?

I completed my open water course in 2013, and came back to do my Advanced to Divemaster Internship.

What where you doing before you joined Crystal Dive's team to complete your scuba diving internship (Diving Lifestyle Program) on Koh Tao?

I had a dance studio, then worked for Lexus as a sales specialist.

How long have you spent completing your scuba diving internship?

I completed the Internship in 2 months. This gave me plenty of time take advantage of Koh Tao's nightlife, as well as assisting with most of the instructors on courses.

What was your favourite part of the scuba diving Internship and why?

I absolutely loved assisting on all the PADI courses. Meeting new people and helping to put some of the more nervous student's minds at ease was very rewarding! The team at Crystal is great so just generally being there with them all was a highlight too.

Ok I'm not going to lie, the 'massage a day' rule I had was also a highlight!

What was your least favourite part and why?

I assisted on an open water course where almost every student was nervous and had learning difficulties in the swimming pool. To make matters worse, the visibility on the first dive wasn't great making the students more nervous than they already were and I did question whether we were going to get them through the course.

After a little pep talk from the Instructor and a good night's sleep, the next day was so much better...

...never give up, eh?

Who was your favourite Instructor and why?

Favourite Instructor, now that's a hard one! Hmmm I first did my open water course with Neil, and he was fantastic! Putting up with me and my friend and making me fall in love with diving I came back for more! Some other's - Michiel, Macca and Vik - all fun and enthusiastic and great guys to get along with.

Carsten, Simon and Jenny all have amazing experience and oh my god I almost forgot about Tina - she makes everything so easy and understandable. You know what; all the Instructors there are my favourite - all of them!

As a qualified PADI Divemaster (or Instructor) what are you future plans with regards to scuba?

If I was ever going to work in the scuba diving industry then I would carry on and do my Instructor course - why not eh?! But at the moment I'm living in Australia, travelling South America in February and going to Uni next year.

So scuba diving I think will just have to be my favourite hobby.

And what about Koh Tao?

Koh Tao is absolute paradise. It's honestly my favourite place in the whole wide world. From the moment you step off that boat you can just feel this laid back, happy atmosphere - just don't chip a tooth because you will have to wait until the dentist comes over at the weekend!

And your favourite restaurant on Koh Tao?

Oh god this is a tougher question than who is my 'favourite instructor'!

Ok so I'm going to narrow it down to 1) Zest (every day I was there), 2) Barracuda (the salmon teriyaki - trust me!), 3) Whitening (the cutest place for couples, with all the tables on the beach) and 4) Famoso (great pizza fix on your walk home from Crystal).

There's also Cafe del Sol on the corner, oh and Pranees Kitchen for a banana milkshake.

Oh god, they are all amazing.

How did you spend your non diving days on Koh Tao?

I'm ashamed to say most of the non diving days consisted of me nursing a hangover! But when you've got a beach to lie on and great people to laugh with - what sounds better?

Where are you heading next?

Since leaving Koh Tao I've been living and working in Australia. Heading to New Zealand in 3 weeks and travelling South America next year, starting at the Rio carnival in Brazil.

It's a hard life isn't it?
