This is how you learn to dive to 40m
Spread over 2 days you will take 3 dives with your instructor slowly extending your limits to 40m.

Part 1: Knowledge Development
The Deep Diving Specialty begins with an introduction to your instructor and the completion of course paperwork. This lays the foundation for an engaging and practical learning experience.
Theory and Knowledge Development
The theory component of the course is completed via self-study on the app or browser, allowing you to learn at your own pace. Your instructor will then review the knowledge reviews with you, clarifying key concepts and discussing specific local procedures for your dives. Unlike some other courses, there’s no formal exam, keeping the focus on applied learning and understanding.

- Deep Diving Equipment: Learn about specialised gear, including redundant air sources and dive computers designed for deeper dives.
- Deep Dive Techniques: Understand the best practices for wall and drift dives at depth.

Part 2: Deep Dives 1 & 2
During the first two dives of your Deep Specialty Course, you’ll begin exploring depths beyond the 18m (60-foot) limit of your Open Water certification. These dives introduce you to the unique challenges and considerations of deep diving.
You’ll focus on monitoring your dive computer for no-decompression limits (NDL) and your pressure gauge, as air consumption increases significantly at greater depths.
Key tasks include:
- Dive Planning: Organising your dive to maximize safety and enjoyment.
- NDL Comparison: Evaluating dive computer readings to understand variations in no-decompression times.
- Navigation at Depth: Refining navigation techniques under increased pressure and reduced light.
Recommended depth range: 18–30m (60–100 feet).
These dives lay the foundation for safe and confident deep diving, preparing you for even greater depths later in the course.
Part 3: Deep Dive 3
Your final dive in the Deep Specialty Course takes you beyond 30m, venturing into depths of up to 40 meters. This is where all your training comes together.
You’ll plan the dive collaboratively with your buddy and instructor, carefully considering depth, time, and safety margins. During the dive, you’ll monitor your dive computer to manage no-decompression limits (NDL) and follow its guidance as you ascend to shallower depths.
Key skills include:
- Emergency Decompression Simulation: Practice handling a scenario where no-stop times are accidentally exceeded, performing a simulated emergency decompression stop.
- Controlled Ascent: Gradually ascend while maintaining safety protocols and decompression limits.
Completing this dive certifies you as a Deep Specialty Diver, ready to explore deeper sites safely and confidently. Celebrate your achievement with a well-deserved cold drink as you watch the sun set over Koh Tao!

The Deep Specialty Course Prerequisites:

Minimum Age
The minimum age to sign up for the Deep Specialty Diver is 15 years, as the maximum depth for divers aged 12 – 14 years is 21 metres and certification requirements have to be met.
Minimum Certification Level
To become a Deep Diving Specialty Diver, you will have to be certified as a Open Water Diver (or hold an equivalent certification of another recognised training agency) and be at least 15 years of age.
Medical Statement
You need to be medically fit for diving. You will find the medical statement for scuba diving here to download. If in doubt, please check with your physician or ask us before booking your dive experience with us.
Insurance
To comply with our dive insurance requirements, you will need to have proof (logbook etc.) of a dive within the last 6 months, otherwise you will need to take part in our Crystal Dive Scuba Review before taking part in the course to receive our insurance cover.

Our underwater videography team, Crystal Images, is available to provide you with personal and lasting memories of your experience and offer unique underwater video and photo services for your course. You can choose from a 10 minute land and underwater based video or 10-15 high resolution photographs.

Can I start my Deep Diver Specialty every day?
In general, yes. We start our courses any given day. To secure your desired start date, we recommend booking your Deep Diver Specialty online here. This will guarantee your placement in a small group of maximum 4 students per instructor.
Is it possible to change the schedule for the Deep Diver Specialty?
Our schedules are flexible and we will do everything to adjust it to your travel plans. Please contact us to arrange for a schedule that suits you within the limits of the Deep Diver Specialty performance requirements.
Is there a shorter course option available for the Deep Diver Specialty?
If you did a deep dive on your Advanced Adventurer, then you have already completed the Deep Adventure Dive. You could then finish all remaining dives in 1 day. Due to the depth we recommend though to split the course over at least 1.5 days or to combine it with other courses. Contact us at any time for more information.
What are the rates for accommodation?
For your Deep Diver Specialty Course we offer accommodation in a private AC room (choice of Double or Twin) at a discounted rate for the standard course duration of 2 nights. There are also upgrade options available for the adjacent Koh Tao Regal or Beach Club Resort. More information here or just contact us directly.
What are the minimum requirements to start my Deep Diver Specialty?

How many students will be together with me in my Deep Diver Specialty?
We pride ourselves to teach our Deep Diver Specialty personal in groups of max. 4 students per instructor. If you still prefer a smaller group or a private course please contact us directly. On the other hand, if you travel in a bigger group, please let us know and we will arrange for multiple instructors to teach you together.
Will I see different dive sites during my Open Water Dives in the Deep Diver Specialty?
We have 2 custom built dive boats and choose the dive sites based on your course requirements, comfort level and weather conditions. Generally, we change dive sites on a daily basis, so you will dive at the best spots available for your Deep Diver Specialty. More about our boats here.
Can I take a Go Pro on my dives for the Deep Diver Specialty?
You can take your own camera on any of the dives. Be aware though, that you may be busy with the tasks at hand. A better option may be to arrange for our in-house video & photo company Crystal Images to either take professional photos or a broadcast quality video of you on two of your dives on the Deep Diver Specialty.
