Internship: PADI Divemaster

What ‘Diving Lifestyle’ Internship program did you complete?

Rescue Diver to Divemaster.

What where you doing before you joined Crystal Dive’s team to complete your scuba diving internship (Diving Lifestyle Program) on Koh Tao?

I was working in jewellery shop run by my family. I liked the job but I was missing diving after discovering scuba diving one year ago here on Koh Tao with Crystal. I did my Open Water and Advanced Open Water here and I were eager to come back to diving!

www.crystaldive.com-alain-chun-divemaster-internship-review-2How long have you spent completing your scuba diving internship?

It took me 7 weeks to finish it, from the end of January to mid-March, straight after the Rescue Diver Course.

What was your favourite part of the scuba diving Internship and why?

I would say a few things, being able to dive every day (which is quite amazing), having fun with wonderful people from the Crystal staff to the DMTs that I learned to know and befriend, all the while learning at the same time from those people, especially the others DMTs as we always had fun together and helped each other out for anything.

What was your least favourite part and why?

Definitely seeing people leaving! I am still not used to the “leaving” part, seeing friends leaving the island, friends which I dived with so many times and having so much fun makes me quite sad. But I know that I will see them again in the future for some diving! Be it on Koh Tao or somewhere else!

Who was your favourite Instructor and why?

I would say Fralex as he was my mentor during the DMT course (and otherwise he is going to be mad at me for not picking him!), he always took the time to help me out with anything and any questions that I had. He was also always here to check after every assists that I did how well I did and to tell me how to learn more from the others Instructors.

On a side note, he was also always here to (literally) kick my ass if I was doing something wrong! Besides he is French so that is good enough to be my favourite instructor!

www.crystaldive.com-alain-chun-divemaster-internship-review-3As a qualified PADI Divemaster what are you future plans with regards to scuba?

I would like to work for some time as a Divemaster as I really enjoy it since I finished my course.

I am also thinking more and more about taking the Instructor Course and then the MSDT (Master Scuba Diver Trainer), which might happens soon as I really enjoyed the time during the DMT when I had to assist Instructors and help out Open and Advanced Water students.

I would love to teach students about diving and make them discover how awesome it is!

And what about Koh Tao?

The first time I arrived here in December 2014 for my Open and Advanced Open Water I was already in love with it. Returning in January was something I was looking forward too for a long time.

I have been staying here for 3 months now and the more I know about the island the more I like it.

I like the fact that you can almost find whatever you want, any kind of atmosphere you’re looking for on the island, from the busy Sairee Beach, always full of people partying to the more quiet and chilled Chalok Ban Kao Bay, with all the cool places in between!

More importantly I love the fact that you can find your own place here. Whatever you are looking for, you will find it.

And your favourite restaurant on Koh Tao?

I would say Coconut Monkey for their amazing wraps, the atmosphere and the location, right next to the beach. Yeah it is pretty cool and if they get a hammock it will be amazing.

How did you spend your non diving days on Koh Tao?

Non-diving days? What is this? I don’t do non diving days!

On a more serious note I usually spend my days off from diving with the others DMTs, going snorkelling in Shark Bay to see some Blacktip reef Sharks and spending some time with the big old turtle living here. Or just spending my afternoon chilling in Coconut Monkey.

Where are you heading next?

I am thinking of staying here on this island for a bit, as I very much like it, and then continue to travel as it is what I am striving for. Maybe Australia or South America? One thing for sure is that it is going to be a place where I can dive!
