What ‘Diving Lifestyle’ Internship program did you complete?

I completed the PADI Divemaster Internship.

What where you doing before you joined Crystal Dive’s team to complete your scuba diving internship (Diving Lifestyle Program) on Koh Tao?

I am a teacher of IT in a college in Saudi Arabia, so I spend all my weekends diving in the Red Sea and on my breaks I travel all over the Middle East. I wanted to travel to Thailand so I made sure that I went to Koh Tao to complete my Divemaster.

www.crystaldive.com-divemaster-internship-koh-tao-john-larmour-2How long have you spent completing your scuba diving internship?

I was on the island just short of 5 weeks. For the first few days I spent my time fun diving and getting to know everyone at Crystal. Once I had my orientation I began to get through and meet the requirements of Crystal’s Divemaster course.

I also completed my Wreck Speciality a long side my DM course.

What was your favourite part of the scuba diving Internship and why?

Working alongside the different instructors and getting to know the customers and making sure that they enjoyed their courses.

Assisting on the Wreck Spec was one of my favorite assists having done the course it was really enjoyable being able to practice the skills that I had learnt.

What was your least favourite part and why?

The swimming pool sessions it took me away from the sea. I know they are a valuable part of the courses to learn the skills but the sea is far more enjoyable

Who was your favourite Instructor and why?

Wow, hard question to answer. I worked with quite a few and all of them were good instructors. I would say the 2 that stand out more for me were Matt Benham, who was my mentor who would always be on hand for any questions that I had and he taught me valuable skills.

The other would be Dirk Schmidt, a very funny guy to work with. He mixes English and German up and you end up just answering in whatever language he uses. He is also very good at what he does.

As a qualified PADI Divemaster what are you future plans with regards to scuba?

I am about to do my EFR Instructor course in Saudi as I won’t have another long holiday until next summer. I still have some places in the world that I want to dive and Thailand will still be on that list so will see where I get to over the next few years.

And what about Koh Tao?

This is one of the nicest places that I have ever visited as everyone is so friendly and you can walk everywhere as nothing is that far away. I love the relaxed vibe and atmosphere the island has, the Dive community brings likeminded people to the island who enjoy the nature of Koh Tao and so respect its beauty.

And your favourite restaurant on Koh Tao?

So many to choose from, from street food to Neptunes for the best pizza I have ever had outside Italy. Zest is always a good call early in the morning for breakfast.

How did you spend your non diving days on Koh Tao?

I never really had that many days off as I was on a limited to time to complete my Diver master. I spent 1 day travelling to Koh Samui to meet up with a friend that i had not seen for 25 years.

Where are you heading next?

Back to Jeddah, working and diving in the Red Sea and seeing where life’s journey takes me to next.
