Name: Katherine Kelly
Hometown: Montreal, Canada
Age: 23
Internship: PADI Divemaster

What PADI scuba diving Internship program did you complete?

PADI Divemaster program.

What were you doing before you joined Crystal Dive?

I left home in October 2016, travelled to Hong Kong, Borneo, Philippines and Thailand. I forgot my mask in Malapascua and the girl that found it told me to come to Koh Tao one day to get it back, so that’s what I did. I ended up staying here and enjoying life on the island.

How long have you spent completing your scuba diving internship?

10 weeks.

What was your favourite part of your scuba diving internship and why?

I loved going to dive with other interns. Practicing bubble rings, getting lost together, and finding cool things underwater. I’ll always remember that time we saved a parrot fish’s life. It was all tangled up in a net in Aow Leuk. I was so happy to be able to help him!

What was your least favourite and why?

My least favourite part is playing the victim during a rescue course assist. It might be a good thing to practise the scenario in the most realistic way butI have to admit that getting the breaths in my mouth was a little too real!

Who was your favourite instructor and why?

TINA & NINA. I absolutely loved the Open Water course assist I did with them. We had 10 students (5 with Tina, 5 with Nina) and they work really well together. They make everything look fun and easy.

During your scuba diving internship which of the additional Marine Conservation ‘ECO’ program activities did you take part in and which did you enjoy the most?

I did two beach cleanups and 4 eco dives. The part I enjoyed the most is sorting out the rubbish that divers find underwater. It’s crazy how random stuff make their way to the bottom. It also makes it very clear that the work we are doing is much needed.

Do you think our additional Marine Conservation ‘ECO’ program was beneficial to your Professional level scuba diving training and if so why?

Yes, the Crystal ECO program was a great addition to my training. Crystal was the first dive resort I dived with that had an ECO program. And now that I’ve seen the work that the team accomplished, I think it’s an essential part of the scuba diving world. I want to keep encouraging and taking part in ECO work throughout the rest of my career.

As a qualified PADI Divemaster what are your future plans with regards to scuba?

I was to scuba dive for the rest of my life. Explore the world while doing what I love. I would love to go work in Komodo one day, my heart stayed there since the day I did my Open Water course.

And what about Koh Tao….

Favourite Restaurant?

‘Duck 995’ in Sairee. Roast duck, yellow noodles and spicy soup.

How did you spend your non-diving days?

Hiking to two views, Sai daeng beach, getting lost in the jungle, snorkelling at shark bay, watching the moon and the stars, watching sunsets with friends and trying to figure out where samosa men is.

Where are you heading to next?

Nowhere. I don’t make plans.
