What PADI scuba diving Internship program did you complete?

I completed the Divemaster program. I got to the island with my open water certification and did my advanced open water and rescue course before stating my DM.

What were you doing before you joined Crystal Dive?

I am a CPA (Chartered Professional Accountant) and I have been working for the past two and a half years as an operations controller in a yeast company. I was in charge of the finances of four plants located in North America and Europe. After seven years of 60+ hours a week, I quit my job for a much needed break.

How long have you spent completing your scuba diving internship?

I completed my Divemaster in six weeks from mid-december until the end of January.

What was your favourite part of your scuba diving internship and why?

It is hard to pick one single element but I would have to say that being able to learn so much in a short period of time along with a great team of fellow DMC’s was the best experience I’ve had in a while. I really got to bond with the people doing the DM with me and it was great to be able to notice how much better we all became.

What was your least favourite and why?

I did my internship in the time of year that the water is cold (it went all the way down to 26 degrees) and I am not someone who can tolerate cold water. Sometimes I would be shivering during the whole dive so it would make my diving experience a bit less pleasant. Luckily the water got warmer as the weeks went by.

Who was your favourite instructor and why?

I didn’t really have a favourite instructor as I was able to learn different thing from each of them. I would have to say that I loved doing my Deep/Nitrox and Wreck speciality with Carsten.

During your scuba diving internship which of the additional Marine Conservation ‘ECO’ program activities did you take part in and which did you enjoy the most?
I did multiple Eco Dive, notably drupella removal, dive against debris and helping out preparing artificial reef structures. I loved the drupella removal the most because it is just like a game of how many drupella can you take out in one dive. We even had a little competition between the DMC.

Do you think our additional Marine Conservation ‘ECO’ program was beneficial to your Professional level scuba diving training and if so why?
I genuinely enjoyed the ECO part of my DM because I got to learn more about the ocean and how to protect it. I think it a primordial aspect of what a Divemaster should know because we need to share the love for the ocean and how to keep it clean.

As a qualified PADI Divemaster what are your future plans with regards to scuba?

I will be going the Crystal working two week internship and after that work for a little bit as a freelancer for Crystal. My plan is to travel to other countries in South-East Asia and find work as a Divemaster. Being from Canada, I would also like to go work in the Caribbean or Central America.

And what about Koh Tao:

Koh Tao is the perfect island to live for a couple of months because it has the perfect mix between Thai and Western food. You can get all the types of food you want, which is very appreciated when you spend a long time at the same place. The nightlife is great, without being crazy like Koh Phangan or Phi Phi. And it’s a small enough island that you can get anywhere within a short bike ride.

Favourite Restaurant?

Famoso in Mae Haad, they make the best pizza and pasta on the island!

How did you spend your non-diving days?

I work remotely as a chartered accountant so my non-diving days would be working on my computer in a cafe. When I wouldn’t be working, I would spend my days relaxing on the beach or by the pool while reading a book or writing. Coconut monkey was definitely my restaurant of choice to go work with a good kombucha and a falafel wrap.

Where are you heading to next?

I will be travelling to Malaysia and Indonesia for the next four months before heading to The Philippines to go for some more diving!
