What PADI scuba diving Internship program did you complete?
PADI Divemaster internship program
What were you doing before you joined Crystal Dive?
Have been traveling for a bit and after that spend some time working in South-Africa for a cage diving company, with heavy focus on the conservation of great white sharks.
How long have you spent completing your scuba diving internship?
Completing the PADI Divemaster internship program took me about two months.
What was your favourite part of your scuba diving internship and why?
Assisting on Open Water courses and being part of the customer learning curves was definitely very exciting. Also, being able to fun dive with other DM/DMC’s was loads of fun. However, I have the feeling my favourite part is yet to come, where I can basically take all the knowledge I have gained at crystal around the world.
What was your least favourite and why?
Having to step into the kit room early in the morning, knowing you’re about to be stung by loads of mosquitos. Also, the stock count in the evening is high on my list.
Who was your favourite instructor and why?
I find it hard to point out a favourite instructor as every instructor is very approachable and knowledgeable. However, I have to say that Dirk has been of great help to me. I had my first scuba diving experience with him and five years later he was more than willing to help me once again, mentoring me throughout my DM program.
During your scuba diving internship which of the additional Marine Conservation ‘ECO’ program activities did you take part in and which did you enjoy the most?
Crystal Dive provides a wide range of different ECO program activities which is a great asset to the company in my opinion. The activity I enjoyed the most has to be the reef clean-up where we collected as much trash as possible from the bottom. Combining one of the things I enjoy doing the most while at the same time doing something good to the world is an amazing feeling.
Do you think our additional Marine Conservation ‘ECO’ program was beneficial to your Professional level scuba diving training and if so why?
Definitely, being a Professional level scuba diver I feel like you should be able to provide other people with loads of knowledge on how to assist on the conservation of our reefs and how to be environmentally friendly.
It think it is of huge importance on our journey to keeping our reefs safe and healthy.
As a qualified PADI Divemaster what are your future plans with regards to scuba?
Turning scuba diving into a career is definitely an option for me in the future. As for now I’d like to stay on Koh Tao for a while but in the near future I would like to combine traveling with teaching/DMing.
And what about Koh Tao: Favourite Restaurant?
I don’t think I actually have a favourite restaurant on Koh Tao. I really like the variety of food on this island.
I love the local food, but whenever I was feeling like a good old western dish, I had plenty of choice. My favourite dish on the island has to be the Panang curry though.
How did you spend your non-diving days?
I haven’t had a lot of non-diving days during my stay on Koh Tao so far. However, if it happens to be one of those days, I love spending time at fishbowl, a hammock or our beloved balcony at P&N.
Where are you heading to next?
As of right now I hope to spend some more time on Koh Tao. After Koh Tao, the plan is to move to Australia with a couple of friends from Crystal in a year or so.
