What PADI scuba diving Internship program did you complete?
What were you doing before you joined Crystal Dive?
Traveling through Asia back in January 2018. Returned for DM internship a little over a year later after returning home for some time.
How long have you spent completing your scuba diving internship?
Nine Days, with a tenth day that I had off in the middle.
What was your favourite part of your scuba diving internship and why?
I enjoy the work and the environment here, it is obviously still work but it has a fun energy to it. Helping to teach customers and watching them take to scuba diving and getting excited while in the water.
What was your least favourite and why?
The early start time, however it can’t be helped and makes sense as to why we have the early start time. The long string of days in a row working, however I know that full time staff work longer days in a row.
Who was your favourite instructor and why?
I enjoyed doing DSD’s with Hanna. She is a lot of fun and laid back which puts customers at ease, but her years of experience show in her professionalism and in the confidence she is able to instil in her students while they’re learning.
As for DM’s everyone on the team was fantastic. Martin as the most senior DM on the team has great leadership ability and takes it upon himself to make sure everything is done properly even though he does have the ability to delegate some tasks to others on the team.
I find it admirable his level of dedication to his work and Crystal’s operations. Most of my internship was spent under the supervision of Diego, Nina, and Nat. Diego has a calm demeanour to him and is extremely helpful with questions and always keeps an eye on others. Nina and Nat both have great upbeat energy and make the work fun for all the staff and equally as fun for the experience for the customers.
I didn’t have many interactions with Chris, however he definitely is great with customers and work around the office and is very professional, work first-fun after from what I can see. It’s very hard to say “who is my favourite”, because I enjoyed working with everyone.
During your scuba diving internship which of the additional Marine Conservation ‘ECO’ program activities did you take part in and which did you enjoy the most?
During my internship I did not get to do any ECO, which I did find disappointing. However during my DMC a year ago I did Cigarette butt clean up, Beach clean-up, Reef clean-up, and I helped cut metal bars and framing for new reef builds.
I enjoyed Reef clean ups a lot and I always am sure to clean up trash as I find it on the reefs and on land. I did also participate in a lecture on sea turtles with Eco at New Heaven Dive centre and turtle sanctuary which was by far my favourite, due to also getting to help feed/ clean/ and apply medicine to the baby sea turtles in New Heaven’s care.
Do you think our additional Marine Conservation ‘ECO’ program was beneficial to your Professional level scuba diving training and if so why?
Yes, learning about the sea turtles and the effects humans and climate change have on the population has helped me be more vigilant in trying to make changes in my life style to benefit the planet and ocean.
I’ve also done my best to spread this information to others to try and help make a change. Doing reef clean-up helped my buoyancy and breath control quite a bit due to needing to go into tight areas to get trash or to stay steady in a current while cutting rope away from sections of the reef.
As a qualified PADI Divemaster what are your future plans with regards to scuba?
For the remainder of the summer I hope to Freelance or work for Crystal as a DM. I am a Firefighter and EMT back home, and currently am on my summer break from Paramedic school.
Once I upgrade to Paramedic I intend to train to join my state’s Scuba Rescue and Recovery Team. In the next few years I’d also like to return to Koh Tao for my IDC.
And what about Koh Tao?
I absolutely love this island and its inhabitants. I see Koh Tao as a second home and when I’m not here I’m always thinking about it and all of the people here that I miss.
Yang’s, Famoso, La Cantina, and Reef.
How did you spend your non-diving days?
Snorkelling, exploring the island, beach days, relaxing, studying, and partying.
Where are you heading to next?
Back home to Massachusetts.
