Crystal Dive – Divemaster Internship – Sophie O'Halloran
Name: Sophie O'Halloran
Hometown: Jersey, Channel Islands
Age: 18
Internship: PADI Divemaster

What ‘Diving Lifestyle’ Internship program did you complete?

PADI Divemaster Internship.

What were you doing before you joined Crystal Dive?

Before I joined Crystal Dive, I had just finished school in the UK. I was waiting until as soon as I turned 18 to come to Koh Tao and complete my Divemaster certification.

How long have you spent completing your scuba diving internship?

I ended up spending just over three months in Koh Tao completing my divemaster course with slot of mini breaks and days off! I fell in love with koh tao so wanted to prolong my stay as long as possible.

What was your favourite part of your scuba diving internship and why?

My favourite part of the internship had to be the eco aspect which Crystal includes in the divemaster internship which involves working with Jenny from Eco Koh Tao on many different eco activities!

What was your least favourite and why?

Can’t really say I have a least favourite part but probably studying for the part 2 exam!

Who was your favourite instructor and why?

Again, a difficult question to answer, but I am especially thankful to my mentor Nina!

During your scuba diving internship which of the additional Marine Conservation ‘ECO’ program activities did you take part in and which did you enjoy the most?

As I mentioned earlier, I thoroughly enjoyed the additional Eco activities offered to us as DMTs, this is an area I am incredibly interested in and I will look to complete an eco internship with Crystal maybe next year! I enjoyed all of the beach cleanups, dive for debris but my favourite Eco activity probably has to be the drupella snail collections!

Do you think our additional Marine Conservation ‘Eco’ program was beneficial to your Professional level scuba diving training and if so why?

For sure, I believe that it’s something PADI should look to integrate as a part of the Divemaster course! It’s good to be aware of the issues the oceans are facing and how we as divers can use our skills and knowledge to help preserve and maintain the marine life and coral we are so lucky to have!

As a qualified PADI Divemaster what are your future plans with regards to scuba?

I will definitely be returning to koh tao in the not so distant further to complete my IDC with crystal and as mentioned earlier I would also like to complete one of the Eco Koh Tao internships and look to gain more knowledge into the conservation aspect of scuba diving.

And what about Koh Tao….

Favourite Restaurant?

Definitely coconut monkey and zest for breakfast and probably Yang’s for dinner.

How did you spend your non-diving days?

I spent the majority of my non-diving days either exploring the many beaches and viewpoints Koh Tao has to offer or relaxing on the beach and going for a snorkel!

Where are, you heading to next?

Currently on my way back home to Jersey for Christmas! But will definitely be returning to Koh Tao within the next year.
