Koh Tao Weather – What to Expect

Thanks to its tropical location, Koh Tao enjoys warm, sunny weather for most of the year, with each season offering something special both above and below the surface. Here’s what to expect month by month:

January – February

The start of the year brings some of the best overall Koh Tao weather, with calm seas, brilliant sunshine, and incredible sunsets. After the monsoon season ends, visibility often stretches up to 30 meters, making it a perfect time for diving and beach days.

March – April – May
With flat, mirror-like sea conditions, these months typically offer the best underwater visibility and are considered the best time to dive Koh Tao. It’s also prime season for spotting whale sharks around Koh Tao — a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many divers.

June – July – August

During this period, a cooling southwest wind brings occasional waves and afternoon showers, but the sun still shines brightly most days.

Dive operations often shift to the island’s east coast, where the waters remain flat, calm, and beautifully clear.

September – October

As temperatures cool slightly, Koh Tao eases into its mild “winter” months. Despite the seasonal change, you’ll still enjoy plenty of sunny days, calm seas, and excellent diving right up until the late-year monsoon approaches.

November – December
November usually marks the beginning of Koh Tao’s brief monsoon season, bringing sporadic rainfall and stronger winds. Some years, the monsoon extends into December, but it typically lasts only a few weeks before the sunshine returns.
