Part 1 – Theory & Equipment Orientation
Your SSI Diver Propulsion Vehicle Specialty Course starts with a short orientation and the required paperwork. You’ll then begin your theory module via the SSI training app, which covers the physics, mechanics, and safety procedures involved in DPV use.
Your instructor will walk you through the underwater scooter course content, including:
- How to charge and store your DPV correctly
- Maintenance routines for both pre- and post-dive care
- Understanding battery life, range, and speed settings
By the end of this session, you’ll have the foundational knowledge needed for safe and efficient DPV handling.
Part 2 – Pool Practice
Before hitting the open water, you’ll get familiar with your DPV in our purpose-built training pool. This session is designed to give you confidence in calm conditions before taking your underwater scooter into the ocean.
Your DPV diving training includes:

- Practicing buoyancy control while using the scooter

Part 3 – Open Water Scooter Dives
In the afternoon, we’ll head out on the boat for some DPV diving.
Dive 1 – Scooter Basics at Sea: You’ll learn safe water entries and exits with the DPV, then practice surface navigation and controlled descents. Underwater, you’ll refine scooter handling and build confidence in real ocean conditions.
Dive 2 – Maneuvering & Emergency Scenarios: This dive focuses on advanced techniques. You’ll practice underwater turns, speed management, and buddy-tow drills in the event of a scooter malfunction. You’ll also get the chance to explore Koh Tao’s reefs at speed which is an unforgettable highlight of this underwater scooter course in Thailand.
After the dives, we’ll review post-dive equipment care, log your dives, and celebrate your new certification!

Minimum Age
To sign up for the DPV diving training course, you must be at least 12 years old.
Minimum Certification Level
You must be a certified SSI Open Water Diver (or hold an equivalent certification from another recognised training agency). This ensures you’re already comfortable underwater before beginning your underwater scooter course in Thailand.
Medical Statement
You must be medically fit for diving. Please review and complete the scuba diving medical statement before arriving. If you’re unsure about any conditions, consult your doctor or reach out to our team for guidance.
Recent Diving Experience
To get the most from your SSI Diver Propulsion Vehicle Specialty Course, you should feel confident and in control underwater. If it’s been more than six months since your last dive, we recommend joining a Scuba Review to refresh your skills and ensure you’re fully comfortable before taking on an underwater scooter course.

In general, yes. We start our courses any given day. To secure your desired start date, we recommend booking your DPV Specialty Course online here. This will guarantee your placement in a small group of maximum 4 students per instructor.
What are the rates for accommodation in my DPV Specialty Course?
For your DPV Specialty Course we offer accommodation in a private AC room (choice of Double or Twin) at a discounted rate for the standard course duration of 1 night. How many students will be together with me in my DPV Specialty Course?
We pride ourselves to teach our DPV Specialty Course personal in groups of max. 4 students per instructor. If you still prefer a smaller group or a private course please contact us directly. On the other hand, if you travel in a bigger group, please let us know and we will arrange for multiple instructors to teach you together.
Will I see different dive sites during my Open Water Dives in the DPV Specialty Course?
We have 2 custom built dive boats and choose the dive sites based on your course requirements, comfort level and weather conditions. Generally, we change dive sites on a daily basis, so you will dive at the best spots available for your DPV Specialty Course. More about our boats here.
Can I take a Go Pro on my dives for the DPV Specialty Course?
Currently, under Thai law, neither students nor instructors are allowed to use cameras during any course, except for specific photo/video courses. Our in-house Video & Photo company Crystal Images can take professional photos or a broadcast quality video of you on two of your dives on the DPV Specialty Course.
