When you think of a shark, what images come to mind? What distinctive features do they have? Sharp teeth? A streamlined body? Fins?
There are hundreds of different species of sharks. Although we can describe these diverse group of fishes in many different ways, sharks all have certain common characteristics – which is what makes a shark a shark.
Sharks live in oceans all over the world and some even journey into freshwater. Explore sharks, from their biology and behavior to misconceptions and the impact of humans on them, and how this ultimately affects the ocean ecosystem.
From the origin and history of sharks to their current place in the ocean ecosystem, this study of sharks is a comprehensive look at these amazing organisms. With over 500 species, we will investigate their biology, interactions, misconceptions, and conservation

Part 1: Theory
We start with an introduction where you’ll meet your instructor, complete the necessary paperwork, and get an overview of the course.
The theoretical part of your Shark Ecology Specialty Course is designed to deepen your understanding of these fascinating predators. Through self-study on the app or browser, you’ll explore detailed modules covering a range of topics that will prepare you for both diving and meaningful conservation efforts.
What You’ll Learn in Theory
1. Shark Biology and Anatomy
- Study the physical adaptations that make sharks efficient predators, such as their streamlined bodies, multiple rows of teeth, and sensory systems like the lateral line and ampullae of Lorenzini.
- Understand their unique respiratory and reproductive systems, including oviparous, ovoviviparous, and viviparous reproduction methods.
2. Species Identification
- Learn to identify common shark species based on size, colouration, fin structure, and habitat preferences.
- Explore iconic species such as reef sharks, hammerheads, and whale sharks.
3. Behaviour and Social Dynamics
- Examine shark behaviours, from hunting techniques to migratory patterns and social interactions.
- Discover how sharks play a critical role in maintaining the health of marine ecosystems.
4. Habitat and Distribution
- Explore the different habitats sharks occupy, from coral reefs to open oceans and deep-sea environments.
- Understand the environmental factors that influence their distribution and survival.
5. Conservation and Human Impact
- Delve into the threats sharks face, such as overfishing, habitat destruction, and bycatch.
- Learn about the importance of shark conservation and the global efforts to protect their populations through marine protected areas, ecotourism, and sustainable fishing practices.
6. Responsible Observation
- Gain knowledge on how to plan dives to observe sharks safely and responsibly, minimising stress and disturbance to their natural behaviours.
After completing your self-study, your instructor will lead a review session to clarify key concepts, answer your questions, and provide additional insights. This thorough preparation ensures you’re ready for the practical diving experience and equips you with the knowledge to appreciate and protect these essential apex predators.
Part 2: Open Water Dives
After lunch, we board one of our custom-built dive boats and head out for two exciting dives, offering a chance to put your shark knowledge into practice.
During these dives, you’ll explore dive sites around Koh Tao known for their vibrant marine ecosystems and the possibility of encountering various shark species, including the majestic whale shark. Your instructor will guide you in recognising species-specific behaviours, habitats, and identifying characteristics.
If you’re lucky enough to spot a whale shark, you’ll observe its gentle movements and learn about its vital role in the ocean as a filter feeder. You’ll also gain an understanding of how to approach these creatures responsibly, maintaining a safe distance to avoid disturbance while appreciating their immense size and beauty.
Even if no sharks are immediately visible, you’ll practise identifying signs of shark activity, such as feeding grounds and tracks, and analyse their role within the broader ecosystem. These dives provide an unforgettable opportunity to connect with sharks and apply your new knowledge in an awe-inspiring underwater environment.
