SSI Shark Ecology Specialty Course

Your SSI Shark Ecology Specialty Course begins with a meet-and-greet, paperwork, and course overview before diving into the online theory component. You’ll study using the DiveSSI app or browser, exploring engaging topics that help you better understand sharks and their role in ocean ecosystems.

What You’ll Learn:

• Shark Biology & Anatomy – Discover how sharks use specialized adaptations like electroreception and dynamic fin structures to survive and thrive.
• Species Identification – Learn to recognize common shark types, from blacktip reef sharks to hammerheads, based on size, color, and fin shapes.
• Shark Behavior – Understand hunting patterns, migration routes, and the social dynamics that influence shark interactions.
• Habitats & Ecosystems – Explore where sharks live, from coral reefs to the deep sea, and how environmental factors shape their distribution.
• Human Impact & Conservation – Examine the threats sharks face and how marine protected areas, ethical diving, and education promote their survival.
• Responsible Shark Observation – Gain practical tips for respectful shark diving that reduces stress and supports long-term conservation.

Once you’ve completed the e-learning, your instructor will lead a review session to reinforce key concepts and answer questions. You’ll be fully prepared for the open water portion of your shark awareness specialty course.

In the afternoon, you’ll join your instructor on one of our custom-built dive boats for two ocean dives as part of your shark ecology training. These dives take place at carefully selected sites known for rich biodiversity and the chance to observe sharks and other pelagic species in their natural environment.

Throughout these dives, you’ll apply what you’ve learned in the shark awareness specialty course, from identifying shark species to interpreting behavior and understanding their ecological role. You’ll also look for signs of shark presence, such as cleaning stations, migratory corridors, and feeding zones.

If you’re lucky, you may even encounter a whale shark. You’ll learn how to observe these gentle giants respectfully and responsibly, following best practices outlined in your shark conservation course in Thailand.

Even if no sharks are spotted during the dive, this is a valuable opportunity to build real-world awareness of how sharks interact with reef ecosystems. You’ll come away with stronger skills, deeper respect for apex predators, and greater confidence in identifying shark habitats and behavior.

To enroll in the Shark Ecology Specialty, you must be at least 10 years old at the start of the course.

You’ll need to hold an Open Water Diver certification from SSI or an equivalent diving agency to begin this shark ecology training.

You must be medically fit for scuba diving. You can download the medical statement here to review the conditions. If you’re unsure about anything, check with your doctor or contact us before booking.

To ensure comfort and safety underwater while you’re learning about shark behavior, we require that you’ve logged a dive within the last 6 months. If not, you’ll need to complete our Scuba Review before starting the course.
