Part 1 – Theory & Knowledge Development

Your journey begins with a course orientation, paperwork, and an overview of your schedule. Then you’ll access your digital learning materials to complete the Knowledge Reviews at your own pace. During your instructor-led review, you’ll dive deeper into the principles of wreck scuba diving, including:

  • Types and classifications of wrecks
  • Planning dives around sunken structures
  • Hazard identification and penetration limits
  • Buoyancy control and finning techniques for wrecks
  • Navigating confined environments
  • Wreck preservation and diver safety

This foundational knowledge will prepare you for safe, efficient, and respectful exploration of underwater wrecks.

Part 2 – Land-Based Skills & Equipment Practice

Before entering the water, you’ll complete land-based practice to prepare for safe wreck exploration. You’ll examine the layout and condition of the wreck, identify entry and exit points, and get hands-on with key equipment.

With your instructor, you’ll:

  • Practice using a dive light in low-visibility scenarios
  • Learn to tie and secure a guideline for wreck penetration
  • Train in buddy line communication and emergency signaling

This dry run builds essential muscle memory and situational awareness before you tackle real-world conditions underwater.

Part 3 – 4 Wreck Dives (Over 2 Days)

Your wreck diving specialty course includes four dives at some of Koh Tao’s most iconic wreck sites:

Dives 1 & 2:
You’ll start with an exterior survey of the wreck. Learn to navigate around the structure, assess stability, identify hazards, and sketch a basic site map. These dives help you understand the wreck’s layout and improve your orientation underwater.

Dive 3:
This dive introduces key skills for limited wreck penetration. You’ll lay a guideline, communicate with your buddy using lights and signals, and take turns leading and following through controlled passages — all while staying within recreational wreck diving limits.

Dive 4:
Choose your adventure: repeat a penetration dive to refine your technique, or complete an advanced navigation dive around the wreck’s exterior. Your instructor will guide your planning to ensure a safe, rewarding final dive.

Upon completion, you’ll be awarded the SSI Wreck Diving Specialty certification, empowering you to explore underwater wrecks all around the world.
