How You’ll Complete the Underwater Navigation Specialty Course

Part 1 – Navigation Theory & Dive Planning
You’ll start by meeting your instructor and reviewing the SSI Navigation Diver Course schedule. Through the SSI e-learning platform, you’ll study how to observe natural cues, estimate distances, plan dive routes using both natural and learn underwater compass skills.
Your instructor will walk you through knowledge reviews and give personal guidance, so you’re confident and prepared to move into the water.
Part 2 – Compass Work & Surface Mapping
In this session, you’ll learn underwater compass skills by practicing heading control, reciprocal navigation, and square pattern drills. You’ll also map out a mock dive site using natural features, helping you visualize underwater topography and prepare for route planning underwater.

Prerequisites for the Underwater Navigation Specialty Course
The underwater navigation specialty course is open to certified divers with a basic skill foundation and a passion for precision underwater. These entry requirements are in place to ensure you’re ready to build on your existing scuba navigation training safely and effectively.

Minimum Age
To participate, you must be at least 10 years old. This course is suitable for younger certified divers ready to develop core navigation diver skills early in their dive journey.
Minimum Certification Level
Open Water Diver certification is required. We also accept equivalent certifications from other recognised dive training agencies.
Medical Statement
All participants must be medically fit for diving. You can download the required scuba medical form here. If you have any concerns, check with a physician or speak with our team before booking your SSI Navigation Diver Course.
Recent Diving Experience
To comply with safety standards, you must have logged a dive within the last 6 months. If not, you’ll need to complete our Scuba Review to refresh your skills before starting the Underwater Navigation Specialty Course.

Can I take a Go Pro on my dives for the Navigation Specialty Course?
Currently, under Thai law, neither students nor instructors are allowed to use cameras during any course, except for specific photo/video courses. Our in-house Video & Photo company Crystal Images can take take professional photos or a broadcast quality video of you on two of your dives on the Navigation Specialty Course.
