Swim for Sharks Koh Tao: Bringing the Community Together for Shark Conservation Thailand

Swim for Sharks Koh Tao

Every year on the shores of our tiny island, divers, swimmers, ocean lovers, and conservationists gather for a unique event with a powerful purpose: Swim for Sharks Koh Tao.

While the event includes a competitive swim with a grand prize, it’s about far more than finishing times or podium places.

It’s about the ocean, awareness, and protecting one of the reef’s most misunderstood animals.

Set in the warm tropical waters of the Gulf of Thailand, this Koh Tao community event brings together locals and visitors to celebrate marine life while raising awareness about shark conservation in Thailand and the importance of sharks in our oceans.

What Is Swim for Sharks?

Swim for Sharks on Koh Tao is a community ocean swim organised to raise awareness and support shark conservation in Thailand.

Participants swim around Koh Nang Yuan island while helping generate attention and support for projects that protect local shark populations and the reefs they call home.

The event is organised by Shark Guardian, an international shark and marine conservation charity that works to improve education, conservation, and public awareness around sharks and ocean ecosystems. Over the years, Swim for Sharks has grown into one of the island’s most recognised annual conservation events, bringing together divers, swimmers, snorkellers, marine advocates, and local businesses.

Today, the event includes both a competitive open-water swim and a more relaxed fun swim and snorkelling option, making it accessible to participants of different experience levels. Beyond the swim itself, the event also helps support wider Koh Tao marine conservation initiatives through education, community involvement, and fundraising efforts.

For many participants, Swim for Sharks is not only about the challenge of swimming in open water. It is also an opportunity to connect with Koh Tao’s ocean community while supporting the protection of sharks and healthy reef ecosystems.

The event welcomes:

  • Divers
  • Freedivers
  • Open-water swimmers
  • Marine conservationists
  • Visitors and ocean enthusiasts

Swim for Sharks Koh Tao is a celebration of the island’s marine environment and the community that works incredibly hard to protect it.

Why Sharks Matter

Sharks play a vital role in healthy marine ecosystems.

As apex predators, they help regulate fish populations and maintain the balance of coral reef systems. Without them, entire marine ecosystems can become unstable.

In Thailand, sharks also play an important role in supporting healthy reef environments that attract divers, snorkellers, and marine researchers from around the world. Protecting shark populations is therefore an important part of wider shark conservation in Thailand and Koh Tao marine conservation.

Unfortunately, many shark species are under threat due to overfishing, habitat loss, accidental bycatch, and demand for shark products.

Events like Swim for Sharks Koh Tao help change the conversation from fear to understanding by encouraging education, awareness, and positive experiences with marine life.

Because the truth is simple. Healthy oceans need sharks.

Sharks Around Koh Tao

Koh Tao is one of the few places in Thailand where snorkellers and divers can encounter reef sharks in relatively shallow water.

Blacktip Reef Sharks, Koh Tao’s most commonly seen species, are often spotted cruising through shallow bays like:

  • Shark Bay
  • Aow Leuk
  • Sai Daeng

These sharks are shy and harmless to humans, usually gliding calmly along the reef or sandy seabed. Juvenile blacktip reef sharks are often seen in protected bays and coastal areas where they can safely grow before moving into deeper water.

For many visitors, seeing Blacktip Reef Sharks on Koh Tao becomes a highlight of their time on the island and often changes people’s perceptions of sharks entirely.

Encounters like these also help support wider Koh Tao marine conservation efforts by encouraging appreciation and protection of local marine ecosystems.

Swim for Sharks Koh Tao celebrates these animals and the healthy reef systems that support them.

The Coral Tribe Swim for Sharks

A Koh Tao Community Event Hosted by Crystal Dive and Coral Tribe

This year’s Swim for Sharks Koh Tao event was proudly hosted by Crystal Dive Koh Tao in collaboration with Coral Tribe and supported by Big Blue Diving.

Both organisations are long-time advocates for Koh Tao marine conservation initiatives, regularly supporting reef restoration, environmental education, and ocean protection projects around the island.

For the event, Crystal Dive and Coral Tribe supplied a support boat along with surface safety teams on kayaks and SUPs, helping ensure swimmers were monitored and assisted throughout the route.

Having experienced dive professionals on the water added an extra level of safety and organisation to the swim, allowing participants to focus on enjoying the experience while supporting an important cause.

It is a perfect example of how this Koh Tao community event brings together dive centres, conservation advocates, volunteers, and ocean lovers to help protect the marine environment that supports the island.

Swim for Sharks 2026: A Koh Tao Community Event in Action

This year’s Swim for Sharks Koh Tao event made a serious splash, with an incredible 86 swimmers taking to the water and an electric atmosphere from start to finish.

Swimmers carved through the course with determination and style, with Liam Amir-Onuma taking 1st place in 50:08, followed closely by Nick Bufton in 51:38, and Rhiannon Owen claiming 3rd overall and 1st female in 55:51.

Behind the scenes, volunteers became the watchful guardians of the course, gliding alongside participants on kayaks and SUPs to help ensure everyone stayed safe and supported throughout the swim. A huge shoutout also goes to the teams from Crystal Dive and Big Blue Diving, whose boats delivered seamless logistics and constant encouragement out on the water.

The event also celebrated some of the incredible people who have become part of the heart of Swim for Sharks Koh Tao over the years. Jim, a true original, has participated in every swim since the event first began in 2010. Nick Bufton, already a regular podium finisher, pushed things even further this year by completing an extraordinary 34km swim from Koh Phangan to Koh Tao in support of the community. Tammy Wade, meanwhile, marked her fifth Swim for Sharks event since 2019 and continues to inspire participants at 53 years old.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, the energy simply shifted gears into a lively celebration at Maya Beach Club, where prizes were handed out, stories were shared, and the entire Koh Tao community came together to celebrate a day that was as meaningful as it was memorable.

Why Events Like This Matter

Public perception of sharks has changed dramatically over the past decade, thanks to conservation efforts, research, and better education.

Events like Swim for Sharks Koh Tao help continue that shift by showing people that sharks are not monsters, but vital parts of healthy marine ecosystems.

For many participants, seeing reef sharks in the wild or learning more about the Blacktip Reef Sharks Koh Tao is known for can completely change the way they think about these animals.

By bringing people together in and around the water, this Koh Tao community event helps raise awareness, encourage ocean stewardship, and support ongoing shark conservation in Thailand and Koh Tao’s marine conservation efforts.
