Part 1: Theory

We will start your training with the mandatory paperwork, an introduction to the schedule, and meeting your instructor.

The course begins with the theory component, which includes completing Knowledge Reviews via the app or browser. Once finished, your instructor will review your answers, provide feedback, and share additional insights to prepare you for the next steps.

In this theoretical training, you’ll learn about wreck classifications, dive planning, hazard management, advanced navigation techniques, and the use of specialized equipment. Topics also include buoyancy control, dive communication, and preserving wreck environments.

This knowledge lays the foundation for safe and confident wreck diving, ensuring you’re ready to move on to the practical diving sessions.

Part 2: Land Practice

Diving on a wreck requires unique considerations compared to exploring a coral reef or other dive sites. You’ll need to assess potential hazards, understand the wreck’s condition, and familiarize yourself with its layout to effectively plan your dive.

Before your Open Water Dives, your instructor will introduce you to the wreck you’ll be exploring. Together, you’ll discuss techniques for identifying hazards, evaluating the wreck’s stability, and determining which areas are safe to enter.

Land-based practice focuses on familiarizing yourself with the additional safety equipment required for wreck diving. You’ll learn to use a flashlight and safety line, practicing knot-tying and line communication techniques to ensure safe and effective coordination with your buddy during your dives. This preparation is key to mastering safe wreck penetration and navigation.

Part 3: 4 Wreck Dives

Your Wreck Diving Specialty includes four dives designed to build progressively over two days.

Dives 1 & 2: These introductory dives familiarize you with the wreck, focusing on its layout, dimensions, potential entry points, and key areas of interest. You’ll assess the wreck’s condition, take notes, and draw a map. This map will serve as the foundation for planning your final dives and will be reviewed with your instructor—perhaps over a beer later!

Dive 3: In this dive, you’ll practice essential techniques for wreck entry. Starting outside the wreck, you’ll test skills learned on land, such as line-laying, knot-tying, flashlight handling, and buddy communication. You’ll switch roles between leader and follower, honing your teamwork and confidence underwater.

Dive 4: The final dive is your choice! You can plan and execute a wreck penetration with your instructor or spend more time exploring the exterior. This dive is your ultimate test to earn your Wreck Specialty Diver certification.
